How often have we, the team of guides, tour leaders, drivers and other travel professionals behind Détours & Guides, heard this from travelers and travel pros alike. And to some extent, they are right. France’s great landmarks deserve their place on any first journey. They are beautiful, fascinating, and often unforgettable.
But they are not the whole story.
Because 99% of France, with its culture, history and people is beyond this.
A France of small roads and unexpected turns, of village markets where the same people have been meeting every week for centuries, of family-run vineyards, quiet medieval streets, forgotten stories, local recipes, craftsmen, scientists, landscapes you almost miss because you are looking for something you have read on a travel article or seen on an influencers’ account.

The more experienced we become as travellers, the less interested we tend to be in simply checking places off a bucket list. After seeing the major monuments and sites, the question switches from “what must I see?” to “what would make my journey unique?”, “what should I experience?”, “who should I meet?”.
The answers may mean spending an afternoon exploring a town with someone who knows the stories, the people. It might mean meeting a producer whose family has been making wine for generations, who is adjusting to new challenges and who will talk about it honestly. We don't believe that a great French journey is about ticking as many boxes as possible. It is about choosing well.
